Business gas

Business gas, without the burn.

Gas pricing is its own confusing world, gigajoules, daily supply, demand. We translate it, compare it, and find you a sharper rate from the retailer panel.

No cost to you. We're paid by the energy retailer when you switch, never by you.

In short: commercial gas is billed in gigajoules across three charges, a usage rate, a daily supply charge, and sometimes a demand charge. We translate it, compare the gas retailers on your actual bill, and switch you to a sharper rate. We're paid by the energy retailer when you switch, never by you.

Why gas bills are weird

Three things almost every business owner gets confused about on gas.

1

The units are different

Gas isn't billed in kilowatt-hours like electricity. It's billed in gigajoules (GJ) or megajoules (MJ). One GJ is roughly the energy a small commercial kitchen uses in a few hours.

2

There are three charges, not one

A gas bill has a usage rate (per GJ), a daily supply charge (fixed per day), and sometimes a demand charge for high-consumption sites. Each can be re-quoted separately.

3

Same retailer, wildly different prices

Gas pricing isn't standardised the way electricity is. A 15-minute conversation with the right retailer rep can move the price more on gas than on electricity. We do that conversation.

We do the conversation. You get the result.

Who needs a gas broker

Gas pays back hardest for hospitality.

If your business has a commercial kitchen, gas is usually 20–40% of your energy spend. That makes savings on gas often bigger in absolute terms than savings on electricity, even though the unit volumes are smaller.

Most likely candidates: restaurants and pubs with full à la carte kitchens · bakeries, breweries, food production · hotels and accommodation with central hot water · manufacturers with process heat (ovens, furnaces, dryers) · laundries and dry cleaners · aged-care and hospital catering kitchens.

Where gas bills go wrong

Three places we always check.

1

Default rates after expiry

Gas contracts often roll to default rates 15–30% above market. We re-quote at renewal, and stay ahead of the cycle so you never get caught.

2

Wrong demand tier

Volume tiers in commercial gas tariffs are often set wrong at sign-up. We right-size, sometimes drops you a tier, which drops the unit rate.

3

Overstated bundle discount

Some retailers offer "bundle gas + electricity" deals where the bundle discount disappears against quoting both separately. We test both before we recommend.

Who we compare

The gas retailers we put to work for you.

We're tied to no one. We compare your gas bill across the panel, and test bundling it with power where that wins.

Common questions

Business gas, answered.

How is commercial gas priced in Queensland?
Business gas is billed in gigajoules across a usage rate, a daily supply charge, and sometimes a demand or capacity charge. The headline cents-per-megajoule rate is only part of the cost, which is why we compare the whole bill, not just the rate.
Does Smarta broker gas as well as electricity?
Yes. We compare the gas retailers on your actual bill and can bundle gas with electricity where a single retailer prices both sharply. We're paid by the energy retailer when you switch, never by you.
Should I bundle gas and electricity together?
Sometimes. A bundled deal is often sharper for sites that buy both at scale, but not always. We test bundled and separate pricing and show you whichever wins on your bill.
